Many places in few days

In Merida there are so many things to do that it's impossible to get bored. As soon as I arrived at 6 am, after a night trip from Playa del Carmen, I took a bus to visit one of the most spectacular Maya ruins : Uxmal. Beautiful as all Maya's cities.

I went back to Merida in the afternoon to visit this colonial city. Almost everyday there are some shows. That night, they organised in the main street, the antique Juego de la pelota (ball game), as the Maya played for centuries. In a previous post i wrote that this game was similar to our basketball... but the truth is that the game is completely different. You still have to center the ring with the ball, but you can't use hands, feet, head. The only part of your body you can use is your hips. Now, as you can imagine, center the ring was practically impossible... but when it happened, big celebrations took place (besides for the man that had to be sacrificed). Another part of the game consisted to give fire to the ball and trying not to let it fall. Crazy Mayas!

The morning after I visited the Gran museo del mundo Maya. The first part of the museum was dedicated to life evolution, dinosaurs and their extinction. Very interesting, but I couldn't understand why they put all this informations in a museum dedicated to the Mayas. Then I understood... The extinction of dinosaurs and other animals is due, according to the main theory, to the impact with a huge meteorite... And this meteorite fell right here, in North Yucatan.

I spent the rest of the afternoon in a bar to watch the world cup : Italy vs England. It's so funny to watch the match with people from all around the world, you don't understand for who they are till the first goal. I suffered for 90 minutes, but not as much as the two English girls sat next to me... I easily made friendship with everyone working at the bar, so I took them to the Italian part. The bar itself was completely decorated with Italian/Mexican colours. I myself bought a tricolour bandana for the world cup: everyone thinks I'm wearing it for Mexico, but the truth is that it's for Italy ;-) at the end of the match, I just went out on the street and I was in the middle of the gay pride. So funny, with lot of music, dances and happy people.

Another night bus and I got to Palenque. I was the first one to enter (yes, I arrived very early) and I had the ruins only for me... Spectacular as I thought... With a beautiful waterfall just next to the ruins.

Few hours later I took a bus to San Cristóbal de Las Casas, a lovely colonial city, with its beautiful markets. Today I spent the afternoon in the main square to watch the world cup : Mexico vs Brazil. We had so much fun...

These last days were very busy, taking buses after buses, visiting a city and get ready to the next one. There are still so many things I would like to see here in Mexico, but time is running out....
