Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is a lovely island. It's enough to see the beach to completely fall in love. Unfortunately also Israelis discovered this paradise and after couple of nights without sleeping because of them, I left the island. But I had enough time to enjoy the beach and to take couple of dives at the reef and at the underwater museum. The reef wasn't that spectacular as in Honduras. It's very damaged. Besides the human impact, in 2005 a tornado destroyed part of the reef. Everywhere you could see some sick or dead corals and the variety of fishes is very low. Even if diving here wasn't that exciting like in Honduras, I think it's important to see with your own eyes the difference between a very healthy reef and a damaged one. To protect the reef, an artist created an underwater museums made of more than 400 human statues and couples of cars. The museum is a good base for corals growth and it's very effective to keep divers far away from the reef. Despite the museum is only 4 years old, corals are already covering the statues and just a little bit remains of their original shape. Funny is to see a man statue with hair made with corals/grass waving with the stream...
