Caye Caulker and Belize City
17/05/2014
My great experience in Belize finished. 3 days and I'm already on my way to Mexico.
After arriving in Belize City, I took a boat to Caye Caulker, a Caribbean Island. I was quite disappointed when I arrived, the island itself wasn't that beautiful (probably I visited too many Caribbean Islands in the last months and my expectations are very high). No vegetation and no beach. I know, it seems impossible, but there was no beach. Nothing to do beside diving and parting. As I wrote in my previous post, I wanted to take here couple of dives, but they were too expensive (even snorkeling was expensive!). The most exciting dive was at the famous Blue Hole : 240 $. No, thanks!
To party, there were only couple of places and even if they weren't very nice, everyone went there because there weren't other options.
Besides this, we also had some rain and cloudy days.
With all this complaints it seems that I had a very bad time on the island, but it wasn't like this .
Probably because I had nothing to do in the island, I spent more time with people met in my hostel: an Irish, a German/Lebanese, and an Israeli guy. We had plenty of time to talk and to get to know each other. Each one of us with completely different stories to share. This time saying goodbye was hard... but that's part of the trip...
Before heading to Mexico, I visited for couple of hours Belize City. The city is quite far to be a modern city (it's not even the capital of the country). Most of the houses are built in wood and many streets are still unpaved. In 1961 a strong hurricane hit the city destroying everything on its way. Since then the capital was moved to Belmopan and Belize City was rebuilt. Even if the city itself hasn't so much to offer, it's worth a visit, at least to chat for a while with its people. They are so smiling and funny with their English... I must admit that I couldn't understand much, but I liked listening them. Great great people!!
Beautiful views from the boat
